About this Class

In this intensive, one-day class, we will cover how to capture professional-looking footage with nothing but your smartphone and minimal gear.

We will explore:

  • What makes for a good social media or promo video
  • Basic lighting techniques and how to shoot with or without a light kit
  • Sound and camera gear you can easily handle if you’re shooting solo
  • How to film in just about any location or environment with quality results
  • Basic art direction for product shots
  • Editing

  • Registration closes April 13.
  • You must have a smartphone with a camera. Either iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet are required.
  • You must be willing and able to download apps and set up an account.
  • Students must be comfortable being filmed by fellow students during practice time in class.
  • A basic knowledge of video editing would be good, but not necessary.

An iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet.Bring your own lighting and sound equipment if you have any. A laptop, tablet or phone with editing software on it would be great to bring if you have it.

Class Policies

Courtney G. Jones is a 30-year veteran of the film and television industry and an advocate for the kind of accessibility mobile filmmaking offers. He serves as head of development for Steve Zahn & Rick Gomez’s company, Macaroni Art Productions, and has produced and directed feature films, commercials, documentaries, and series - some shot on mobile. He brings a wealth of technical and creative know-how to the classroom. Courtney’s main goal is to show that anyone can make something amazing with the technology in their pocket. When he is not writing, producing, filming, editing, or teaching, he is typically daydreaming about flying, living on a boat, or trying new recipes.
