Make a picnic tote – fill it with a pie and a cutting board you can also make at BARN. Do it for – or with – mom!

About this Class

This is one of our three special nods to Mother's Day.  Make this stylish and useful picnic tote sized to fit a cute, square cutting board you can make in the Woodworking Studio in the morning of the same day. And you can fill the tote with a delicious pie you can make in the Kitchen on Mother’s Day. You can take one or two or all of these classes.

How about making the tote - or all three projects - with your mom or grandma or with your kids or grandkids? You can also come to any or all of the classes on your own. You’ll have not only a delicious pie and a gorgeous picnic tote and cutting board to enjoy all summer long, but you’ll also have the skills to make more totes to customize as you like.

For this class you’ll receive a pre-cut kit including everything you need to make an 11” x 9.5” x 9.5” lightly padded canvas tote. You’ll also receive cotton webbing to make straps, which you can cut to the length you choose.

  • Skill Level: Beginners are welcome. You should be able to sew a straight-ish seam on your sewing machine.
  • A $42 materials kit fee, included in the cost of the class, includes pre-cut  canvas, lining, batting, webbing, and coordinating thread. Materials students should or may bring are listed below.
  • Students may use BARN irons and ironing boards.

You will make a 11” x 9.5” x 9.5” lightly padded canvas tote.

Students should bring:

  • A sewing machine with a fresh needle (or register to borrow a BARN sewing machine)
  • Basic sewing tools - scissors and cutting tools, marking and measuring tools, pins or clips (or use BARN’s)
  • BARN has irons and ironing boards for your use.

If you're reserving a BARN sewing machine, you must have completed any session of Learn How to Use the Fiber Studio Sewing Machines or Orientation to Fiber Sewing Machines.

Fran Fuller learned to sew when she was 6 or 7 from her mother, who was a precise, creative, inspiring sewist and a very patient teacher. Fran sewed her own clothes through high school and college, and now she sews clothing, home decorating items, and bags.
