Build a small bookcase, bench, table or other relatively simple project of your choosing as you learn to take a project through all of the steps from initial idea to finished project.

This class, part of BARN's Woodworking Basics series, is designed for students who have at least beginner-level skills with hand and power tools but want to develop those skills more under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

The first session, focused on developing a plan and calculating materials, will be taught as a regular class. You will then have almost a week to buy materials. The following five sessions coincide with Open Studio times. You will share use of the shop's tools with other users, but you and up to three other students will have a dedicated instructor to help you through all of the steps. The class is limited to four students to ensure that you get enough help from the instructor.

You will get the most out of this class if you come to the first session with an idea of what you want to build. Prior to the class, you may want to spend some time perusing project ideas in the books and magazines in the Woodworking Studio's library.

  • Open to students 14+ years old who have taken Orientation to the Woodshop, Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1, and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2. Besides these required classes, you need to have completed Beginning Woodworking: Hand Tools and Beginning Woodworking: Power Tools, or have the instructor's permission, which you can arrange using this form. Please login to your BARN account and click on "My event registrations" to ensure you will have completed the required prerequisites before this class begins.
  • The materials fee charged when you register covers only shop supplies. You will need to supply your own wood, which you can purchase from BARN or elsewhere. There is a week between the first and second sessions to allow time for this and to get guidance at the first session about the type and amount of wood you need.
  • The six class sessions may not be enough for you to finish your project. Plan on doing additional work during the woodshop's 30 hours a week of Open Studio time, if needed, so that you complete your project by the end of the class. Open studio time is always free for BARN members. Non-members can also use Open Studio to work on class projects without an additional fee.

  • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
