Gamers, it's time to get behind the scenes! In this after-school class, students will learn to make retro-looking video games that they can play on their own handheld game consoles. They will be using Makecode Arcade, a web-based coding platform that enables students to create their own video games including the visual elements like characters and backgrounds and all the rules and mechanics of the game, programming everything using block-based coding.
During the class the students will be introduced to the coding environment; we’ll talk about different games, taking inspiration from them and then the students will design their own simple game (like Flappy Bird, Squirrel Eat Squirrel, etc).
When the games are ready, we’ll be downloading them into their own Meowbit codable console (included in the price of the class) where they’ll be able to play their game and show it off to friends and family.
This could also make a great gift to a friend or family member! This is an introductory class where students will learn how to create a simple game and will acquire skills to make more in the future.
For more artistic-minded students, it is an opportunity to make visually interesting gaming assets and coding them to make beautiful retro-looking games.
Please Note: Students will need to either bring their own chromebook or laptop, or they can use one from BARN - please select one of these options during the registration process. iPads or phones will not work.
