In this exciting Monday printmaking experience, Jan Branham will be demonstrating and teaching two important techniques, Drypoint and Chine Collé. Drypoint is a printmaking technique in which an etching stylus is used to draw into a plate, and in this workshop, the plate will be plexiglas. The plate is then inked and hand-printed in a traditional 'copper plate' manner.

Jan will also demonstrate and incorporate a Chin Collé technique into this process. It is both a printing and pasting technique that adheres Japanese paper onto the print paper surface when running a plate through the press.

Please find and bring a winter-scape to use as your inspiration, preferably in black and white. (Please note the studio does have a copier/printer available that can be used to convert images to black and white.) Each participant will leave class with a set of three to four of their own prints!

About the Instructor

During the last ten years, Jan Branham retired to Bainbridge Island after a 35-year career as a public high school art teacher in California. She has since become a full-time printmaker, which she finds very satisfying and artistically nourishing. Jan primarily works using collage and other printmaking techniques such as etching, linocut, woodblock, and collagraph, as well as the mixing of media to satisfy her image curiosity.

Jan currently works with several groups of printmakers as well as being an active member of BARN’s Print Studio. She has been included in a number of local and national shows, from Port Townsend to Brooklyn. See more of Jan’s work at the Island Gallery here on Bainbridge Island.
