Please note that this class has had an added second day session.

In this unique class, you will explore the meditative technique of powdered glass frit. Using frit powders of various colors and choosing previously dried foliage you will create striking floral images in this class.

In the three-hour session on day 1 (12:00 to 3:00 PM) you will come to understand the necessary safety practices and clean up using glass powders. Then with step-by-step instruction you will practice the process of layering frit to colorize the dried foliage you have chosen to decorate your dishware.

During the one-hour session on day 2 (12:00 to 1:00 PM) you will learn how and why to clean your powdered and initially fired pieces to prepare them for fully fusing each to a background piece of glass prior to slumping. Frit combined with foliage creates delicate organic images that will compliment your food presentation or anything you might imagine.

In this class you will produce one 9” x 9” square swoop serving piece, one 3" x 9" channel plate, and three 3” x 3” condiment dishes.

    Details:

    • There is a $45 materials fee included in the class tuition.
    • Suitable for ages 14 and up.
    • Note: Instructions will be included in your registration confirmation email on how to dry & store your foliage before class.

By stacking layers of transparent sheet glass and fusing them in the kiln, images can achieve a unique sense of depth. In this workshop, we will examine methods for hand painting and drawing on glass with the use of glass powder and enamel. We will consider both abstract, and representational approaches; and formal drawing skills are not necessary.

Students should consider what imagery they would like to work on prior to the start of class. The instructor will send out an email to enrolled students explaining what they will be working on and how they can prepare.

Session 1: A slideshow about the process and a hands on demonstration for painting with enamel paints and drawing with glass powder will be presented. The best way to realize your images through a combination of powder drawing and enamel painting will be covered. We will break down each student’s image into dimensional layers, and spend the remainder of class time working.

    Students are
welcome to stay and work for as long as they like after class. The instructor will be in the studio all evening to answer questions, and then will load everyone’s projects into the kiln.

Session 2: Will begin with unloading the kiln and discussing the results of the first firing. The instructor will give a lecture about firing schedules and common kiln practices such as bubble control. How to properly set up a stacked full fuse in the kiln will be demonstrated, and students will set up their projects for the final firing. Students may also spend time creating additional pieces and samples that will not be a part of their layered project.

Students may come pick up their fully fused work the following day.

Handouts will also be available to take home.

    Details:

    • This class is a good beginner or all levels class.
    • A $100 materials fee is included in the price of the class.
    • Please bring a bag lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and a microwave for your use.
    • Remember to wear close-toed shoes & long pants in the Glass Studio at all times! This is a strictly enforced safety policy. Thank you.

Coldworking is a subtractive way of altering and sculpting glass once it is cold. This process can be anything from seaming edges on glass plates to completely transforming the identity of a hot-formed object.

In this 2 session class we will learn, in depth different approaches to the belt sander, wet saw, and hand lapping, discussing the potential of each technique. We will learn how to bring rough ground surfaces to a full polish, and talk about the aesthetic possibilities of leaving a surface matte.

We will also cover glass glues and their possibilities in an artist’s work.

The first day will include a safety talk and demos on each machine. We will walk through the rules of what tool to use for what purpose and have time on the machines to get our projects
    moving.

The second day will be a day focused on students working, become familiar with each machine, and ask for specific demos and tips. Students will gain the most from this class if they come with some of their own glass and a plan or some sketches on the potential alterations they are interested in making.

    Instructor Bio:
William Miller grew up in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with his B.F.A. in Craft and Material Studies and a minor in Art History.  He was first introduced to glassblowing  in VCU's Hot Shop. Seduced by the magic of the material, he has set out on a relentless pursuit to make glassblowing the central focus of his life. He has studied at the Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Craft, and the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass.

Miller utilizes distinct color selections that are layered and blown in the hot shop. Once cool, he cuts and engraves the surface of the glass to create line and texture. The process of carving the glass is slow and meditative, which balances the relative immediacy of its initial creation. This process allows him to build an intimate relationship with each piece, which informs the direction of the cuts and texture that are applied to create unique and visually striking glass objects.

The artist currently resides in Seattle where he works in the vibrant glassblowing community and continues to explore his artistic voice.

Instructor Bios: Tobi Strevell has been creating fused glass since 2014. She has studied with various artists at BARN, Bullseye Glass, and at local private art studios. Her pieces include functional, architectural, jewelry and sculptural art.

Debra Arend was introduced to the techniques of fused glass through BARN in 2018, and fell in love with the diversity of the medium. Continually learning from teachers near and far, gives her the opportunity to create a variety of art pieces from wall art, repurposing lantern glass with art glass, recycled glass sculpture and dynamic serving-ware for everyday and entertainment use.
